In the Bentley electrical schematic and instrument pages it shows that the LEDs require a resistor of 240 ohms. The resistors are soldered onto the blue printed circuit. I would play around with the resistors to see if none would get them brighter if that is what you are seeking.

PS. those puppies are pricey if you get them from VW (like everything else). Radio shack has a whole plethora of assorted colors and sizes and voltages as you may already know.
