I too drove a diesel vanagon for 2 years.   I don't recommend owning
one if you are:   impatiant, don't like being passed by semi's, or ever
think you'll be in a hurry!    Other than that they are great to own.  
I towed over 2000 lbs with mine while crusing at it's top speed of 70
mph/hr!  (But that's that the turbo is for!)
