Timing is dead dog simple on an I4 conversion!
On the back (pulley side) of the engine there is an arrow on the timing belt
cover. There is a corresponding notch on pulley that drives the v-belt for
the alternator. When these two are lined up the engine is at top dead
center. The best thing here is it get a variable timing light - you can get
these here in Canada at Canadian Tire for about $120 CAD. Set the timing to
the desired amount (should be found in your manual for the engine ignition -
you do have on supplied with the engine right!?). How is this done, well, I
am not sure on the SA ignition system, but on the North American Motronic
systems, it is set by the computer and you can't adjust it. As long as the
distributor rotor is lined up with the notch on the distributor when the
engine is at TDC you are done. If it is user adjustable light the Digifant
II systems, you have to remove the coolant sensor plug to the computer,
loosen the 13mm both that prevents the distributor from moving and then turn
the distributor until the timing is at the desired point - usually this is 6
BTDC. Tighten the bolt, rev the engine above 2500 RPM a few times and
recheck the timing.

Thanks to listmember Kyle Wade, I got my TiiCo exhaust sorted out. Now I
just need to get the timing done. Kyle gave me a couple pointers on that,
but unfortunatley I've never set the timing on any car before. Should I
just take it to my mechanic to finish it up, or is there an Idiot's Guide
to Timing out there somewhere?
Everything is installed, oil is in it, but coolant isn't. I just don't
want to screw up my brand new motor.
Thanks for any assistance that can be provided! :)
