Robert Lilley (wolfvan88@aol.com) is the guru of the wbx mods... upgrades to our stock vanagon engines. He has a whole list of things he suggests for people who want to make them more efficient, powerful, etc. some of us have done about half of his suggestions (hence the half lilley) by adding the power chip to the 022D ecu, new ratio rockers, push rods, valve covers, and a more free-flow exhaust system. The entire lilley consists of counterbalancing the crankshaft, ceramic-coating the heads, etc, etc., but those involve disassembling the engine. The half-lilley can be done with the engine intact.

The good news is that the half lilley is easy to do and not all that expensive. The adds can be installed in a day or so and the improvement in power and mileage is substantial. I highly recommend it. Hats off to Robert!
