Thanks to all that responded both on the list and privately via e-mail to my question about interference between the new Kenwood speaker grilles in the front doors of my westy and the window winders. Each response was different and I think all were good solutions. Since the vehicle is a beater (all be it a much loved, clean, and well maintained beater), I opted for the quick and dirty solution of bending the winder handles. These appear to be cast aluminum and quite brittle. By bending slowly and carefully I was able to gain the half inch extra clearance I required. The bent handles don't feel much different than before and operate easily.

By the way, I am really enjoying the new stereo I installed in the westy. It is an AIWA MP3/CD device with an infrared remote that mounts on the steering wheel. These devices are available on ebay for $235.00. This stereo allows me to listen to over 600 MB of MP3 content that I burn onto $0.30 media. Depending on encoding rates, that is over 10 hours of music. I have also burned book on tape content on the CD's. This really makes the time fly as I motor down the freeway at 55mph powered by 47 whopping diesel horses.
