Not sure what the torque curve is of my current setup, but here goes the "seat of the pants" experience with my Syncro Vanagon/TDI with the following gearbox changes: 1.19 3rd and 0.70 4th gears:

2.1 Stock Wasserboxer, stock gearing - 15-17 mpg - tough going 65mph up some interstate hills - max "flat" speed 80mph?

1.9 TDI w/ stock chip - easy to go 70mph up same interstate hills - similar horsepower to the 2.1 wasserboxer - but torque MUCH lower down so it drives better in all gears - pulls better than wasserboxer on most highway hills - 27+ mpg avg so far (accurate) in combo driving - max "flat" speed 85ish mph?

1.9 TDI with UpSolute "low smoke" chip - easy to go 75 up same interstate hills - NOTICEABLE improvement over stock TDI in every gear - even more torque than stock TDI, especially near 2000rpm - estimated 25mpg (not precise) in combo driving - max "flat" speed 90mph - the van is actually a blast to drive now

So, there you have it -- a non-scientific "seat of the pants" addendum to Frank's list of available motors for use in a Vanagon.

Still not done "tweaking" this beast and much still left to be done. (need to fix a cracked head for one thing!)
