Don't jump to the wrong misconception. It said "ohms changing" and your ohms are changing. It is hard to test the AFM with an ohmmeter and get any useful info because it is not a typical potentiometer. The best approach is to connect a D cell to the end terminals (probably 1 & 4 if I remember right), connect your *voltmeter* to one of those pins and to the slider (pin 2 ?) and watch the voltage as you move the vane. If the voltage varies smoothly, without dropping to zero anywhere in the middle, you're probably OK.
