The relief valve is in the pump. It is normal for the pressure to increase when trying to turn the rack past the stroke limits. There is even a pressure switch to raise the idle during this condition. Of course holding the wheel hard is abusive to the pump, rack, and hoses. It is not too difficult to disassemble the pump and replace the seal.

On our '86 Syncro Westfalia, the power steering pump has developed a leak. It only leaks when I take tight turns and it only leaks from the pump shaft area.

My question is, is my problem only with the pump or should I look at the rack for the cause of the high pressure on tight turns. I have a spare pump if that is all that I need. But my concern is that somehow there should be a relief valve in the rack which isn't functioning. Can anyone shed some light on how this power steering system works?
