I think I didn't word this very well. What I meant was it is possible to get very lucky and not incur damage when the belt breaks. Ironically, this was my first diesel and knowing nothing about this engine I made the mistake of asking an acquaintance who I assumed knew what he was talking about (he worked for Volkswagon) how often I should change the belt. He looked at mine and claimed it was good for lots more mileage. It broke the next week! Last time I consulted an expert. Angus
