Does your shifter seem to "hit a wall" so to speak when trying to get into first or does it go into "the right slot" and then grind and is Reverse being cooperative?? Need some specific clues other than just hard to get into first to get a clearer idea. I assume you are talking about 1st and not "G" gear (Geland or Granny Low) Look for sloppy linkage and if its OK, then try to readjust a bit. My trick is to put the van into the offending gear (1st) with the engine off and slightly loosen the 2 bolts under the shift boot and knock the shifter towards the steering wheel to try to get it a bit more aligned with the "slot" for first. Minor adjustment problems can be fixed this way but if it still won't cooperate, then adjust the coupler under the van as previously suggested. I have an '89 Sycro and am having problems shifting into first gear. All the other gears are fine (I am using the low 1st gear to get rolling). I thought I remembered seeing this problem addressed previously on the list, but I couldn't find it in the archives. I believe it was solved by adjusting (rotating?) some part of the linkage. Does anyone have the details on this procedure?
