I've seen the valves get pushed through the head hard enough to break the cam bearing caps.

Yes, the diesel is an interference engine. In the belt breaks, the pistons will hit the valves. In our experience, this bends the valves, but does not damage the head.

THe subject says it all- what are the potential consequences of a busted timing belt in a diesel I4 engine? Are the valves interfering? If so, what is the availability of a new or re-man'ed head? Would one expect to be able to rebuild a head if the valves got smacked?

This is from an older diesel jetta- so i guess that is the smaller I4.

I may be in the market for new (to me) engine if that will be a cheaper route.

Thanks -Matthew
