Yes, the valves are interfering - yes there will be damage - reman heads are out there not sure of the price, but they are expensive.

Usually 1.6TDs sell for about $1000 to $1500 Canadian in this area as they are in high demand and people do break timing belts and are looking at a $1000+ repair bill at the local shop - hence installing a TD is the way to go when faced with that decision.

Start to finish it takes about 3h to do a Diesel timing belt and special tools are needed - it is well worth the expense to change the belt every 3 to 4 years than it is to break one.

THe subject says it all- what are the potential consequences of a busted timing belt in a diesel I4 engine? Are the valves interfering? If so, what is the availability of a new or re-man'ed head? Would one expect to be able to rebuild a head if the valves got smacked?

This is from an older diesel jetta- so i guess that is the smaller I4.

I may be in the market for new (to me) engine if that will be a cheaper route.

Thanks -Matthew
