Subject: Re: Brake Light Switch?
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Recently, I asked for help with a problem I was having with my brake lights. They only worked when I pressed very hard on the brake pedal. Many people posted or privately mailed suggestions.

Connecting an ohm meter to each brake light switch and pressing on the brake pedal, it appeard that both switches worked at about the same pressure--which was much less than what was needed to cause the brake lights to work. I then pulled both rear light housings and inspected the bulbs and contacts. One brake light bulb contact had a small amount of corrosion and both light bulbs were pretty dark from use and age. After cleaning the contacts for all bulbs and replacing both stop light bulbs, the brake lights now work fine.

I believe it was Joel who first suggested that I check for continuity problems. I would have saved myself a lot of trouble had I done that first. But, I now know how to remove the instrument cluster, check the brake light switches, and put everything back together. I think/hope everything still works.

Thanks for all the help--my confidence is soaring, so tomorrow I may tackle installing the Berg short shift kit. Keep your fingers crossed.
