I just helped a friend with the same problem--the cable had fallen out of the speedometer. Pop off the top of the instrument cluster. You should see the speedometer cable go straight into the back of the speedo. My friend's had fallen out, so we put it back in with a little jiggling and rigged up a zip-tie thing to keep it from falling out again. I think some glue had given up or some plastic flange had broken, allowing the cable to come free. Hope that's the case with you...
