Have to share a success story - I was driving back to the bay area Sunday night after a tiring weekend of climbing long alpine routes in Toulomne when the van had a sudden VERY powerfull surge. The surge was quick, but forcefull enough to make me pull over and take a look in the engine compartment. As I pulled off to the side of the road, she died and I coasted to a stop. Everything I could see looked to be in order, it was 8pm and quite dark so it was hard to really get a good look at what was going on. The van was cranking just fine, but it seemed like no fuel was getting to the injectors. Full tank of gas, what next? I had fuel and pressure comming into and out of the fuel filter, so I guesed it wasnt a fuel pump problem. Hall sendor and distributer seemed in tack. I remembered once getting stuck at altitude because of an O2 sensor problem, so I checked that and found the male connecter had been torn loose. As I looked closer in that area of the engine, I could see that the main cable running from the ignition coil to the distributer was totally burned out. I touched it gently and it crumbled apart. A quick clean up job and re-wiring of the cable and she fired right up, but massive sparks were shooting out of the coil, grounding out on another wire that connected to the coil. Wrapped that baby up with electrical tape and it was insulated enough to stop the spark. In no time we were on our way. Felt great to be able to diagnose the problem on the road at night like that, fix it and get home. Ive learned a hell of a lot about engines since buying the ol syncro, and most of my successes is owed to the list and all of the great members who are so willing to provide advice. Thanks list!
