If it's a small leak, you may wait awhile-no long trips. Tnere should be no connection to a power loss unless coolant is getting on something it shouldn't (electrical etc.). You can do this job in your driveway, but it is a fairly complicated job, not to mention bleeding the system (see lots of entries to recent list). I'm not a major mechanic, but I was kinda broke once and did this job successfully, but it was more than I expected.
