Volks -

One thing to check on is having your Westfalia insured as an RV. I saved quite a bit of money when I switched. Apparently the logic is that RVs are mainly driven on vacations, not in the day-to-day battle of city driving where most accidents happen. If they ask about a toilet, remember your porta-potti!

On another point, if you do drop collision, and get uninsured motorist coverage, check to see if it would pay for damage to your vehicle. My agent says that it will only cover to the extent my coverage would if I were the one at fault. In other words, if I don't have collision, it won't repair my car.

Seems wrong to me, but that's what he said! I checked after some friends had their car totaled by an uninsured judgement-proof driver (no assets). They didn't have collision, so their uninsured motorist coverage didn't help.

I hate to admit it but I have liability insurance only on my 91 syncro westy for most of the year. I do "up it" to comprehensive when I take long trips (I know that most accidents happen within 10 miles (?) of home, but I rarely drive the van when NOT on vacations).

Also FWIW, many insurance companies offer 1 "free" claim every x # of years. You might want to check that out.
