Evon and I did it about 5 years ago on our way cross-country in an 83-1/2 Westy. Camped right on the beach overnight, built a fire on the sand, listened to the waves crashing as we slept. It was one of the highlights of our trip! We had no difficulty at all driving the Westy in the sand. We did it at about this time of year and there was only one other vehicle in sight. The next morning, however, we awoke to see a bunch of vehicles and lots of people just up the beach from us. Turned out they were getting ready to film a Subaru Outback commercial there with Paul Hogan.

We had a prospective buyer for the Westy back in Pennsylvania (we had purchased it in San Francisco solely for the purpose of driving cross-country, with some help from Kyle at Volks Cafe in Santa Cruz - thanks, Kyle!), and had promised the interested couple some photos of the van. We decided that a backdrop of Pismo Beach, with nothing in sight but sand, waves, and a perfect blue sky, was about as picturesque a shot of the van that we'd be likely to find, so we took some snapshots and mailed them off. Not only did they buy the van (which they still have to this day), but we became the best of friends, and they are now the godparents of our 3-year-old daughter.
