Kaput!

My 85 Vanagon has always run like a finely oiled sewing machine, but the other day it gave me a problem. While going along at 35 or so, it just quit, kaput! It would turn over, but not start – I was in a dangerous location, so I called for a tow. Once back home, and after an hour or so, it fired right up and seems to be running fine again?! Can anyone offer any suggestions on where to start? I’m hesitant on taking it out again for fear of this happening again. Any help would be greatly appreciated…
