Subject: Another rust hot spot

Further to Malcolm Stebbins recent post concerning locations prone to rusting....

Peek inside the rear wheel well on the driver's side. There you'll find two hoses clamped in place, resting on a ledge just behind the rear shock. A moist accumulation of dirt, sand, salt and various other strains of crud will probably have built up on the ledge due to being trapped by the hoses. In my case, the rust had advanced enough that my screwdriver easily poked through the metal wall into the engine compartment while I was cleaning away the accumulation.

Although my Westy is an '87, the inherently poor design with hoses sitting on ledges in locations exposed to the crud kicked up by tires probably applies to other model years as well.
