You really need the supports whether the exhaust system is old or new.  It seems like I've seen a post about fabricating new exhaust
supports (assuming you don't have access to a parts van).  Now that searching the archives is "Fast" ... you might find something
there.

Some folks like having the mix of studs and bolts for the exhaust system .... others prefer all bolts.

Whenever I've reinstalled a stud I've "Double nutted" the stud then used a socket wrench to drive it in.
