Did you use OEM O2 sensor? On my 84 Westy with a 91 Jetta 1.8. I used a cheep universal sensor and three weeks later the van ran so rich that unburned fuel came out the tail pipe and I could only get to 30 MPH. After paying the extra for the OEM Bosch sensor it's ran great.
