Usually the tach signal wire is a green or green/black stripe wire that is
about 14 to 16 gauge depending on the vehicle. Just a simple 14 gauge wire
(insulated) is all you need to carry the signal from the #1 terminal on the
coil to the tachometer.
When I installed the tachometer in my 84 I had to do some modifications to
make it work as there was a clock and then in came the tach - if I remember
correctly, without looking at the Bentley manual the power for the clock is
the same pin in the connector for the tachometer signal, so it is NOT a plug
and play situation. I just ran a wire to the location on the tachometer
where it wanted the signal.
Sorry this is about as clear as mud, but once it is done, you will see that
this makes sense!

David, and Listees,
I've obtained an '87 GL instrument panel, complete with digital clock and
tachomete. Can I deduce from your message that the tach connection is just a
matter of running a line (what size wire?) from the coil to what part
(connection point) of the tach?
Is the complete instrument panel interchangeable, to your knowledge, or do I
just replace the standard clock-with-the-hands with the tachometer and
connect a
single wire as you specify? What, then, would power the clock?
Thanks,
