KW, i'd first verify it is NOT the linkage. I'd go under the bus and put it in gear manually. Remember your "Group Theory" --- well, 1'st gear is not up left but is instead back right.... etc.

Then if that doesnt' work, your tranny is busted :-( Doooooh! Too bad i'm not near you because in the past week i've pulled one type1, type2 and a syncro tranny & I've installed one type 2. (no i'm not a mechanic... just a handy friend i guess!).
