I've heard that 2WD Vanagons are not as good as earlier busses on snow and ice. There is a customer of my mechanic (Cory Motors) with an '86 2WD Westy that lives up a long dirt road and had trouble in the winter months (mud). Mike Cory retrofitted a diff locker into his trans and now he is apparently very happy with the performance. All I can say is that Syncros are of course amazing on snow and ice - better than any other vehicle I have ever driven or owned (and that included a LOT of other 4x4 vehicles).
