Subject: accident damage: repair or replace?
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hi Folks,

Yesterday, the bus ('85 GL) was mercilessly struck by an 18-y.o. in a honda civic. All human parties involved had only minor bumps and bruises but the bus has suffered quite a bit a damage to the rear tire/axle. I don't know the technical names for all the torn and bent bits of metal but I'll do my best to describe the damage. The most noticeable and troubling damage is to the area at the front of the drivers side rear wheel-well. There is a pin/bolt covered with thick rubber that attaches to the body through a piece of metal welded to the body. The pin/bolt was ripped completely through the metal. The pin/bolt is attached to a large metal piece that extends back to the axle, possibly suspension related? There is another bolt that I think attaches the axle to the body near where the brake line comes down that is bent and the rim/axle is bent as well.

My main concern is that pin/bolt that ripped through the metal. Obviously, that piece of metal that held it in place will need to be rewelded to the body/frame. I worry about the structural integrity and stability of the weld and suspension and axle. And, of course, the cost since the insurance will probably declare the van a total loss and I would be paying for most of these repairs out of pocket. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks, Michelle '85 GL "Chicken Bus"
