Hi folks,

Not quite the same thing but my problem was very similar I have and 82 with an 89 Jetta motor (My dieselfant II :oD) Which did the same thing. I poked around a bit and was just about to go back to the diesel filter (which is substantially larger and by dint of the size always had enough oil in it) when I ran across the latest greatest Purolator filter. Which for about 5-6 bucks a filter has this cute little valve in a decent full steel (not fram) filter. I believe it's called the pureone filter here's the official brag sheet from them. http://www.pureoil.com/featuresandbenefits.htm

If you're in a higher tax bracket you might consider checking out the K&N, same thing basically except about 10-12 bucks a pop around here. Personally I'm a cheap bastard so I'll stick with the Purolator.
