I am currently re-wiring (just repairing) the wireloom under the dash of
an 81 Vanagon.
Seems that the last "Projectaholic" wired the fuel pump through the
backup lights. I can only reason that he only wanted to be able to start
the vehicle while it was in reverse (like an anti theft devise).
The long and short of this is that he has swapped a considerable number
of wires around on the fuse panel to get his desired effects.
Well after about four hours of sorting through his half assed electrical
engineering creation, I've got the horn, wipers, turn signals,
headlights, tail lights, brake lights and emergency flashers all back
working again.
I'm currently working towards: #1. Getting instrument lights #2. Getting
the engine to run (in the normally wired configuration) and last and
least important, getting the backup lights to work.
I've searched this vehicle high and low for a stash of drugs and haven't
found anything that Colombo would arrest on but I'd sure like to arrest
this PO for ignorance, stupidity and being a"Projectaholic".
Admittedly the van ran fine with his *jury rig* but lost some of its
dependability factor when only a mad scientist could figure out his
purpose in wiring the fuel pump through the reverse light switch not to
mention that he has really pissed me off.
If I ever see this big of a wiring mess again I'm going to crush the van
for revenge.

Up to my project bound butt in a birds nest of wires.
