OK, I have grappled with this one and made peace with the answer.
According to VW,  it is the FRONT seal.
According to VW, their rear longitudinal engines which have a BACKWARDS
placement have no relevance as to the "FRONT" pulley position.
FRONT is FRONT is FRONT.
