Phil: Flagstaff has incredible biking and hiking. Sedona the same. I went to Flagstaff, through Sedona to Prescott, and on to Mingus Mt. last Memorial Day. Just pulled off the no./so. hiway (89) going through Flagstaff, north of town and used that for a central point to ride from. Get some maps of those areas and info. here in Salt Lake (I live here too...the Avenues) and plan your trip. You'll want to move to the area. Flag is at altitude 7K so it'll be cooler than Sedona this time of year. They have a ski resort there. Have fun. http://plasma.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine/index.html?id=362 ....try this Nat'l Geo site for creating a map to/of the areas you'd be interested in going to. My wife and I bought our VW for two reasons:

1) The killer dog Star (Picutres can be seen at http://www.users.qwest.net/~walker100/). Once we had the dog, the camping was more difficult, and finding a hotel on the road was even more difficult, especially considering item number 2).

2) We can't plan a trip to save our lives. We've never been on a real honeymoon (airplane, tropics, etc). The more we try to make a plan for something, the less inclined we are to do it. The Westy allows us to make up our minds at the last minute and and go whereever w/o having to commit too much.

Case in point: A month or so ago we decided that we would go to St George/Zions for Thanksgiving to do some biking/hiking. Well, just last night we both realized that we could easily get out of work for the beginning of the week, and we could take to whole week off. We've bagged St. George b/c it is so close and decided to go another state or two south. Now I was hoping for a bit of feedback on places to camp/bike/hike in New Mexico/Arizona.

We were hoping for a centrally located area where we could do our activities without driving around too much during the day. We've been to Chaco in NM and really enjoyed that. We were thinking about Sedona in AZ, and it looks to have the biking/hiking, but I don't know anything about local (primitive) camping. We try to stay out of campgrounds to give the pooch some room to run.

Any help would be much appreciated, and I'll return the love I can when someone is looking for places to go/stay in Utah. I am itching for some good/new bike rides, and my wife loves good hikes.

PS. Thanks for the help with the little screw caps. The knife blade is the best trick. I was able to get my shelf apart and run the wires w/o any problem. Thanks for the help. As always, the list is great.
