This happened to my 87 Wolfsburg.  The latch is a toggling push latch like
those  used
on some cabinets with flush mount doors, and it had gotten crankier and
crankier until it finally went on strike.
I finally pried the table open.   Turned out that (on that model, anyway)
the catch was
secured to either the body or the table (I forget which) with  double-stick
tape which separated before
anything broke.   You could replace it with another from a good woodworking
supply shop.
(BTW - Gary - did you ever fix it?)
