Someone correct meeze if I am wrong, but the Air Cooled TDC sensor mounted in the engine flange behind the flywheel is for diagnostic porpoises only.

My 83 had one, not connected, and I was told it was only for the techs to know when TDC occured during tuneups using one of VW's expensive diagnostic tools. My 81 never had one.
