I don't know if this is applicable, but I throw it out in case it benefits anyone. The oil filter on my big Ford 6.9 liter diesel is mounted on a angle and getting it off without making a huge mess was always a problem until I heard this method: Take an all and a hammer and punch a hole in the lowest portion of the oil filter. Let it drain into an oil catch basin until it's empty. THEN take it off. No spilling.
