We had the same problem and bought "safe traps" at a local feed store--they are undoubtedly available elsewhere also.

They are very simple: small container with a trap door: place food in the container, open the door, place on the floor; the container is balanced so that

it will tip backward and close the door when a mouse goes for the food.

after it is tripped, just take it and release the mouse some distance away from your van

no blood, no guts, no fuss
