The only difficulty with this job is the fact that you need three arms. The tricky part is dealing with the steering shaft joint while raising the rack into place. I found that attaching the joint to the rack before raising it was easier for me. Also spread the spline clamp with a screwdriver to make it easier to slide onto the shaft. If its rusty, oil the splines too.

Are you getting the rubber bushings that mount the rack too? If not better look into that. When steering racks leak fluid onto these bushings they change from firm rubber into marshmallow. Other than that, should be straightforward.

hi volks, i just bought a rebuilt power steering rack from the bus depot for my 85 vanagon westy. i will probably attempt the install when i get some free time in the coming days. anybody done this? and have suggestions, or things to keep in mind? any hints that could save me time or improve the quality of install? thanks, -steve
