As I read this I find myself about to carry a fairly good sized motor (215T frame, about 200lbs.) to an electrical apparatus shop. I do it with some trepidation because I cannot think of a convenient way to shackle it. Because I am traveling alone, it is placed against the passenger's seat pedestal. Still, that loose mass will weigh on my mind the 30 miles to my destination.

What in the world does this have to do with toting a battery around unmounted? On this list, a few months ago, we were all reminded of what can result during an accident from carrying loose objects in our cars. A listmember recounted the tragic death of her loved one who was struck by a flying toolbox during a minor collision and cautioned us about being cavalier regarding such things. Years ago, I overheard a state cop say that the fatal victim of an accident he had investigated probably would have walked away if it had not been for the spare tire which had been lying unfettered in the cargo area of his station wagon.

Oh, I know I will carry things unsecured again, but I will also do what I can to limit my exposure. The older I get, the more I find myself wondering how many times am I allowed to get away with something before it bites me in the ass.
