The VW Fox is a great, cheap car. Period. My very first - and only, as it were - brand new car, was a '88 VW Fox GL Sport. Racked up about 210k miles on the darn thing in just over six years. Never, not once, did that car leave me stranded. Never changed the timing belt. Never had any engine problems at all. Changed the oil and filter about every five thousand miles, replaced wear-and-tear items like brakes, tires, struts, alternator, plugs, exhaust, etc. And that's it. The only real problem I had was the transmission. The syncros went out on 5th gear. Found a VW mechanic wiz that had a 5-speed from an Audi 4k that traded the tranny and labor for my old beat-to-crap '83 GTi.

These cars are very good in the snow, with the right tires. I used to drive it from Rutland, VT to Rochester, NY virtually every weekend for four years. Great car. I'd drive another in a NY minute.

I don't really know much about fancy watercoolered cars. i guess I'll have to look at the rad and stuff. : )

thanks,

greg. 82 (aircooled) westy.
