The maximum allowed by TuV in Germany is 2000KG with brakes for a 2WD T3 and 2500KG for a Syncro - this is even with the 112HP wasserboxer motor. Proving that it is the brakes that is what is needed to tow more than this. BTW both are 700KG with out brakes.

No trailer. Just a tow-dolley. Race car is an 89 GTI (it weighs in at 1995 lbs). No problems stopping it. I was actually impressed with the stopping power of my van. Mind you I do have all new brakes on it including calipers.
