Stan,
My yacht has a automatic switch, with a manual override, for charging,
and swiching batteries on demand.
The switch's are available at any finer RV, or boating supply
purveyor's.
It's a good idea to have something like this, because you are correct,
the deep cycle has a different charging rate than the starting battery.
I don't know if it will smoke the alternator or not, but I do know the
lessor charged battery will pull off the better one without an isolator.
AC golf cart's?
Boy, are you dating yourself !!! :>)

E-mail message From Stan Wilder;
I've seen several dual battery setups and the solenoids and switches
that have been installed to regulate the use and charging of the
batteries. Along with this I've found 100% of these vehicles had smoked
alternators or their wireloom and they always had other electrical
problems that required a manual to return to normal VW wiring
configuration. Deep cycle batteries are a good investment but if they
are coupled to a non deep cycle without the proper relays and safety
devices you'll find that the non deep cycle battery gets over charged,
oveheated because deep cycle batteries require a longer charging cycle.
I'm telling you this because I was a Dealer for Allis Chalmers Golf
Carts, Pargo Golf Carts and refurbisned Taylor Dunn and many other
brands of electric golf carts and in-plant industrial vehicles. It just
ain't something you mix without problems............ use two regular or
two deep cycle but don't mix them. OK! I'm holding onto my keyboard to
get the responses to this....
