I have the exact same problem with my 86 weekender, 190 000 KM with original starter. On a cold day, it wont even start and I have to push start the van ( not always easy ). If I stop the engine immediately, the starter works well. Seems like the solenoid is sticking when its cold. I have clean the all contacts at the starter and by-passed the ignition switch but it didnt help. I guess my next step is to change the starter. Mathieu 86 weekender Quebec
