Re: Heater/vent control panel/cigarette lighter illuminating lights...I just removed and "Tightened" up my in-dash lighter.
It is easier to remove the ashtray and/or the glovebox and reach behind the lighter and push it out from the rear. The lighter socket should first be unplugged electrically and pushed out from the green plastic. You can then remove the wire to the light in the green plastic ring and push the ring out (sort of unbuttoning it due to the placement of the light socket).
The little "Grabbies" on the green plastic ring were worn on mine and I just put a single wrap of electrical tape around the part that fits in the hole and pushed (buttoned) it back in. I connected the light and then pushed the lighter socket back in the ring and connected its plug.
Take care to align the lighter socket so that a solid part of the socket shell makes contact with the ground prong from the light.
Now it's nice and tight and the tape can't be seen at all.

Any ideas on shoring up the cigarette lighter when it's been removed one time too many? Both of mine are really loose.

It is actually fairly easy to remove the cigarette lighter from the dash.
While it may not be the preferred or only way of doing it, I have found that using a wooden or plastic wedge in a prying motion around the circumference of the socket works well. IIRC, the lighter is only a friction-fit situation, no pesky screws or other. Limited slack in the wiring, so when it finally gives proceed with caution.
Just be patient and apply the prying evenly.

Hi there... My illuminating lights behind the heater/vent control panel and the cigarette lighter (with green ring) in my 88 Weekender went out for a while. With daylight getting shorter and more driving in the dark, I decide to get those light bulbs replaced, anyone experience in replacing bulb in those two places? Do I have to tear them out of the dashboard? Or let my hand crawling inside the dashboard? Any advice will be appreciated... Thanks.
