Standard Vanagons range from 2800 to 3300 pounds. The type I and II busses are lighter by about 600-700 pounds. If your thinking about towing be sure to get a standard tranny van. In the real world I think I'd select a vehicle with front wheel drive and use a car dolly. The weight distribution on Vanagons is acceptable for car dollys but is marginal and you can experience some wandering of the Vanagon on the dolly.

Best of luck to you. Stan Wilder 83 Westfalia Air Cooled
