Jim,

Vanagons are a bit too heavy to tow for long distances. To give some idea of it;s weight, AAA recommends towing from the front only with their cabover tow truck contractors. Most of the new front cab tow trucks get their front ends unsafely lifted by every bump on the road when towing Vanagons from the rear. There is no inexpensive tow bar which can be fitted w/o welding unlike the early buses which can be fitted with one that goes under the torsion bar.

Anyway, as someone else has mentioned, go standard trans if you decide to go this route.
