If your vanagon is like mine you take off the front grill. Four or five plastic screw type "screws" at the top. Be careful, they are not screws. Just a 1/4 turn releases them. To the right you will see the antenna under the outer body panel.

I put in an automatic one. $60 for the generic antenna and $120 for labor. You can do it yourself if you want to mess with the time and labor, but for me to avoid those midnight drunks who like to break off antennae or to avoid getting out of the van to pull it up and down it is a small luxury.
