Can't remember the years, but...

Golf 1, the original hatchback, beginning 1974 (butchered and called Rabbit in North America). The handling benchmark (excluding North American cars, which had sadly detuned suspension). Generic single or dual round headlights (ugly mismatched rectangular in later Rabbits). Still manufactured in South Africa. Pickup version called Caddy; notchback called Jetta (yet-tuh). Coupe called Scirocco.

Golf 2, second-generation Golf (first model sold as Golf in North America). Lost the handling abilities of first generation. Generic single or dual round headlights. Pickuop discontinued. Notchback Jetta. Coupe Scirocco.

Golf 3 (carried on nonenthusiast's nonhandling tradition introduced by Golf 2). First version offered with VR6 engine. Flush ovalish this-model-only headlights. Notchback ?Jetta. Coupe Corrado.

Golf 4 - current mode, still lacking handling ability (this includes New Beetle version). Notchback called Vento, I think (still Jetta in USA). Coupe discontinued.
