I've been running my 83 Westy for seven years and I've had the heater boxes, muffler off about five times in those years. I but the copper plated (steel) exhaust nuts and use never seize and I've never had any problems. I don't have to deal with salt on the roads here in Texas so your needs may be more severe but I've also used brass nuts on steel and they work well too.
