I use a 3Com modem card with special cable to a Nokia 6162 cell phone (AT&T system). It's slow (usually 4800 bps) but it works wherever I can get an analog connection. There are phones that take a direct serial connection (cheaper and faster) but these only work when you're in a digital service area. I dunno about "surfing the archives" though -- I think you need a regular phone or a satellite connection or such for that. I can just barely work on the web if I suppress all images. Even email is tedious since a lot of people now have signatures bigger than messages used to be...not to mention HTML and >>>>>>infinite regression.
