David, first may I ask-have you tried to crank it with the syncro starter?
Maybe it will work-use 1 guage battery cable.
I don't know what a syncro starter looks like,but one way to get more power
out of the starter is to increase the windings of the present starter. If
only you could use a Vanagon Diesel starter . I've seen audi 5-cylinder
starter thats look big enough(I think they were audi starters).
Or a KEP adapter plate? A long shot since I have never studied this is to
use a Diesel bellhousing which of course runs contrary to you plans-
