Subject: Engine wanted if it's cheap!

Let me give you the full story.
I have an '85GL. I started taking it to a mechanic I found who specializes
in VW's, mostly aircooled though. He drives a '76 baywindow bus himself. He
started working on my machine, and liked it so much, one day I walked into
his place and there was a blue 86GL he'd dragged from a Pennsylvania salvage
yard to his place in North Bergen New Jersey.
It has an engine, but it's a pretty shot engine. It's got an automatic
tranny, and he wants to rebuild it so he can tow stuff with it, since towing
with the 76 (stick) is a PITA. That means he's looking minimally for a 2.1L
engine.
His choices are:
#1) To rebuild the existing engine (PITA, but he can do it)
#2) Find an existing, good 2.1 that'll bolt right in
#3) Do an engine conversion (subaru, TIIco, vr6, whatever)
Items #1 and #3 are the most hassle, while #1 is the cheapest, and #3 will
produce the most reliable results -- particularly when towing.
He wants me to do the legwork and find if #2 is an option. I'm more than
happy to convert people to the Vanagon. But we need to find a decent 2.1 at
a decent price. If the engine is too expensive, it's cheaper for him to
rebuild the existing 2.1.
He wants to balance the price to obtain and then ship versus what he'd spend
in time and money to rebuild the existing engine.
What we're looking for is a 2.1 (or a very strong 1.9) with all the wiring
harnesses and computer -- and if you've got that, call *him* at 201-866-6664
(since I know nothing about engines -- why else would I be taking my van to
a mechanic in the first place!?)...
His name is Jaime, and here's his number again: 201-866-6664... And the two
of you can haggle over the price (leave me out of this!)...
Okay, now everyone knows as much as I do.
