As in any negotiation, the two parties may have different perceptions.
In this case, I would, in order to preserve my reputation and standing with
this list, give him the money back and ask him to return the part at his
leisure. You can re-sell it with proper info to the bidders.

Your argument, that 7 people called and were told the specifics, doesn't let
you off the hook on any other bidder.

Regarding $83 for a $275 part, I think that eBay presents a forum for that
kind of deal as long as the sellers are forthcoming about what they're
offering and how the buyer will pay. And the $15 starting bid is just
that...starting.

Being right is not what selling is about; being customer oriented is.
Some listees may remember the Parts Place (Michigan) flap about the hapless
Vanagon girl and her dealings with them...that story cost them any
subsequent business from me.

As far as I see it, $83 is a pretty cheap price for a good reputation.
